Read at least one chapter of your bible every day, and two on Sundays.
Ok, so I know this seems pretty crazy, but it's actually really cool. Because if you do this, then you'll finish your entire bible in a year. And it will make an impact, whether you think it will or not.
Reading the bible is such a big deal, girlie! It just is! Here's why:
Reading the bible is such a big deal, girlie! It just is! Here's why:
- It's your weapon in war
- God told you to do so
Honestly, do we need any more reasons?? But let me flesh this out a little for you.
It's your weapon in war:
Please tell me you aren't totally helpless on the mission field and someone took the time to teach you what the Armor of God is?? If not, go pick up your bible and read Ephesians 6:10-20. Know what I'm talking about now? (I see the light-bulbs going off from here!) God commands us to "17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Ok, so now we know what we're supposed to be doing. Our sword is God's word, girl! Yes, it may have a pommel in the shape of a rose, or your favorite verse inscribed on the blade. Oh wait . . . it is your favorite bible verse! (Please tell me you saw that coming and rolled your eyes? It deserved an eye roll) Seriously, bible verses hold power. Knowing the truth is power. Yes, my challenges have a theme. I'm not asking you to memorize anything (yet!) but please, read you bible. Pick it up, and read a chapter. How hard is that?
God told you to:
It's true! In the Old Testament, he actually commands parents to teach their children the law, put it in their door-frames, (yes, in the door-frame!) and teach it in all your comings and goings. It's a thing. But you have to be willing to put some time into this as well.
Got something for you to do real fast. Get off this for a second, then go find you bible, and come back. I'll wait, so just go do it.
Got your bible now? Ok, now hold it so that the spine rests against the table, desk, your lap, the couch, or the floor in front of you and let it fall open. You should end up somewhere in Job, Psalms, or Proverbs. Psalms is my favorite y'all. It's the most honest section of the entire bible. It's the Psalmist (generally David) spilling his guts to God. I find it amazing and awesome. Plus, typically Psalms aren't terribly long. (Psalm 119 being the exception) So, you could start your challenge in Psalms. Or, if you could flip to Mark or Luke, and read about Jesus's life. Why those two?
Mark - fast, action packed book.
Luke - a little slower, full of awesome information about Jesus (plus there's a sequel: Acts)
So, now you know. Please, do this with me? I'll try to ask about it every once and a while so we can make sure we're actually doing it! (Good way to keep track: cross out the days on you calendar you do it!)

Thank you so much! I have been going through Luke, but I read like 10 verses a day, and our pastor has been stressing a chapter a week to get the congregation in the word. I will try this, lord willing, once I finish Luke (I am in the end of chapter 24 so literally almost done).
ReplyDeleteAlso, when you said to grab a bible- guess what? I can't turn my phone on its spine :P
:) Phone's don't really have spines!
DeleteSo glad you're in your bible, though, that's awesome! That's the goal, whether you read ten verses or one chapter. I just know that if you read a chapter, it will slow you down a little and get you thinking!
